Woodworking Project

1 – Design Process

There are five basic steps to the design process:

  • Collecting Ideas
  • Sketching Ideas
  • Making Mock-ups (sample shell of what it will look like)
  • Drawing Plans
  • Building a Design

To begin this project, you will need to discuss with people in your group your ideas for completing the Keepsake Box project. Record your ideas on the top of a plain 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

2 – Sketch Images

There are two types of sketches that you will use in the project. To begin with, on the sheet of looseleaf your are going to make thumbnail sketches. A thumbnail sketch is often a small, quick sketch that captures your ideas and sometimes lead of new ideas. As the designer, you may create many thumbnail sketches, from which you will choose your best ideas.

From all of the thumbnail sketches that you have generated, it is time to make a three rough sketches from your best ideas. These take more time to complete and should be approximately the same size as the design you would like to make from your materials. Show your designs to your group members and gather additional ideas if necessary.

3 – Design Transfer

Now that you have conferred with your group members and have a plan for your final design, you are ready for your final sketch.

Using the graph paper provided, create you design on the 10cm x 10cm graph paper. You need to ensure that final design you create has at least a 1.2 cm (12mm) edge all the way around. You will need to drill through this edge to attach all of the pieces together.

Once you have completed your drawing. Show your teacher your completed design. Once it receives approval you are ready for your first block of wood.

Start by cutting out your design from the piece of graph paper.
Tape your design to the top of the block of wood
Trace around your design to transfer the image to be cut out of the block of wood.
Remove your paper design from the block of wood.
